Anime Review: Arms Alchemy

Arms Alchemy or Busou Renkin is a Japanese anime that was created by Nobuhiro Watsuki, which also created the famous Rurouni Kenshin also known as Samurai X. It can be seen by how it was drawn and the plot that there are really similarities with both of his works. Like to Samurai X, Arms Alchemy is mainly Shounen type with a little bit of everything else: Romance, Comedy, Action, Fantasy. This kinds of anime is not interesting but keeps you surprisingly addicted to it. The main character as usual is a normal kid, named Kazuki, which become the new hero in town who fights evil, the Homunculus, to protect his loved ones and eventually find love in his journey. The difference would be that the varieties of weapons used by the characters were more creative and imaginative and it goes the same with the enemies. It did disappoint many taking into consideration how his previous work was a big hit all over the world including here in the Philippines. Arms Alchemy didn’t even compare with Samurai X hence it ended to only 26 episodes. But for me, both were pretty much the same except that Samurai X has that historical perspective and facts regarding Japan which keeps viewers interested in it. But in fact, Arms Alchemy has an edge when looking at the main female character in the name of Tokiko.

Unlike any other love interest of any male main character of any anime series, Tokiko is a fighter. She is not your regular long haired, needs-to-protect, shy kind of girl (See the scar in her nose???). This makes up for some weakness of the series. And wait until you see her arms alchemy. Multiple blades equipped in her legs!!! That is girl power. This series, i guess, proposes the modern society’s gender equality and hopefully in the future female domination (Bwahahaha…..)

Some drawbacks in the series was definitely the ending. For me, it didn’t give a massive impact considering that it was the end. I felt lost thinking whether it was the climax or that it was going to end.. the last episode was annoying since it prolonged the episode before showing what happened to Kazuki. *Sorry for the spoilers*

Another thing would be the repetitive dialouge of the main character about how he has to protect his love ones, for Tokiko, for his sister and for everybody.. I really got the point from the beginning he said it.. tsk.. tsk..

Basically, this anime is not BIG of an anime but is still worth the time, especially when your craving to escape from reality!!!
